
Outdoors there are no walls to reinforce the sound. Everything you produce travels away and never returns, which changes the power calculation, the coverage strategy and the equipment you can safely use.
Expect to need considerably more power outdoors than for the same audience indoors, because there is no room reinforcement. Plan for weather, distribute speakers to cover the audience depth, and check local noise limits before specifying.

Why outdoor systems need more power
Indoors, reflections from walls and ceiling add to the direct sound, sometimes contributing several dB. Outdoors that contribution is absent entirely.
Level falls at the full 6 dB per doubling of distance from a point source, so the back of a large audience area receives dramatically less than the front.
The practical response is distribution rather than brute force. Delay positions partway back deliver even coverage far more efficiently than making the main system louder.
Wind, temperature and how they bend sound
Wind blowing from stage toward audience carries sound further; wind in the opposite direction reduces throw noticeably. Crosswind can shift coverage sideways.
Temperature gradients refract sound. On a warm evening with cooler air above, sound bends upward and coverage at distance suffers.
These effects are real but unpredictable, which is another argument for distributed coverage rather than relying on a single long throw.
Weather protection and electrical safety
Standard cabinets are not weatherproof. For any event with rain risk, use weatherproof cabinets or provide genuine physical cover, not just a sheet draped over the box.
All outdoor electrical distribution should use residual current protection and appropriately rated connectors. Water and mains power together are the most serious risk at any outdoor event.
Raise amplifier racks off the ground. Standing water is common and arrives quickly.
Noise limits and neighbour management
Many jurisdictions impose limits at the site boundary or at nearby dwellings, often with a curfew time. Establish the limit before specifying the system.
Directional control helps considerably. Speakers aimed at the audience rather than spraying widely reduce off-site level for the same audience experience.
Low frequencies travel furthest and generate most complaints. Cardioid subwoofer arrangements reduce rearward output substantially.
